Pull the Weeds from Your “Life Garden"

By Dee Taylor-Jolley

Dr. Brené Brown believes we should embrace our imperfections.

She says that when we embrace our own vulnerabilities, we allow ourselves to live more fully and authentically.

We come to understand that we are enough, and that we are worthy of love, belonging, and joy– not despite our imperfections, but because of them.

And to help ourselves live our best authentic selves, Dr. Brown offers us 11 things to eliminate from our “life garden” in her 15-minute video.

  1. Always being right. This creates a closed mindset. Instead, focus on learning and being kind to self and others.
  2. Comparing yourself to others. Comparison is the theft of your joy! Compare yourself to your yesterday.
  3. Seeking approval of others.
  4. Fear of failure. Failure is a part of success – not the opposite. Let failure be your teacher.
  5. Busyness. We use this to avoid thinking and making important decisions.
  6. Toxic relationships. Are there folks we need to cut out of our lives?
  7. Negative self-talk. Capture your thoughts. Analyze them. Replace them with positive thoughts.
  8. Need for perfection. Done is better than perfect. Then improve on it.
  9. Information overload. Be selective of where your information comes from.
  10. Multi-tasking. It’s a myth.
  11. Limiting beliefs. Challenge them. Beliefs shape our reality!
