Embrace the Chaos
By Dee Taylor-Jolley
Amor Fati is the idea and practice of embracing everything that life throws at us – the good and the bad, the calm and the chaos.
This idea has its origins in Stoic philosophy, with Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius and was later embraced by thinkers like Friedrich Nietzsche.
They consistently emphasized the acceptance and embracing the chaos of life...its uncontrollable reality.
It is a mindset that says, “embrace everything that happens in life as necessary, meaningful, and even beneficial for our growth and fulfillment.”
I say that can be a hard pill to swallow.
Amor Fati says we should accept reality as it is without resistance. Amor Fati is a practice, not a destination.
Embracing this mindset will help us turn our obstacles into opportunities for we are forced to practice resilience, patience and persistence.
How can we practice Amor Fati?
- Shift Our Perspective
When something "negative" happens, pause and ask, "What can I learn from this?" - Practice Radical Acceptance
Focus on what we can control and let go of what we cannot. - Reframe Our Challenges
Reflect on how our past difficulties have positively shaped our character and forced us to grow. - Be Intentional About Our Life
Decide what we want out of life. Write down our goals. Write down our plans. Map out our strategies to implement our plans. Take action!
In essence, Amor Fati is about embracing life as it is.
And finding joy in the journey – no matter how bumpy the road.
