Think and Grow Rich

By Dee Taylor-Jolley

The famous book, Think and Grow Rich, was published in 1937 during the Great Depression.

Author Napoleon Hill was inspired to write his work by the Scottish immigrate, Andrew Carnegie (who by this time was a powerful industrialist, business magnate, and philanthropist).

Andrew Carnegie challenged Napoleon Hill to research and document a philosophy of success that could be accessible to anyone willing to put it into practice.

Carnegie believed that success could be distilled into a set of principles or a "science" that, when followed diligently, would lead to wealth and achievement.

So, Napoleon Hill spent several years interviewing and studying over 500 successful individuals, including Carnegie himself, Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Alexander Graham Bell, and many others.

Through this research, Hill identified 13 common traits and strategies shared by these successful people.

They became the basic principles of the book, Think and Grow Rich.

First, Napoleon Hill said we must have strong desire to achieve our goals. That sets up our drive.

Then, we must have faith in our own ability to achieve our strong desires. Our faith acts as the bridge between where we are and where we want to go.

Next is the concept of autosuggestion – and this is where I hang my hat today.

Autosuggestion is the third principle in building riches, according to Napoleon Hill.

And what is autosuggestion?

It’s “the agency of communication between that part of the mind where conscious thought takes place and that which serves as the seat of action for the subconscious mind.”

Simply put, autosuggestion is self-suggestion.

According to Napoleon Hill, “Your ability to use the principle of autosuggestion will largely depend upon your capacity to concentrate upon a given desire until that desire becomes a burning obsession.”

My question is, how do we build “auto (self)-suggestion?”

This can be done by repeating positive affirmations and visualizing our goals as already accomplished.

But just reading our affirmations is not enough. We must read them with emotion and feeling!

When we program our subconscious mind with positive thoughts, we overcome our self-doubt and limiting beliefs and push toward our goals – no matter how outrageous they may seem to others.

When we do this, our subconscious mind will act on our thoughts. This means we add belief to our thoughts and our spoken word.

As part of our Think and Grow Rich mastermind group, we are to daily write and read our strong affirmations.

Here’s an example of an autosuggestion that relates to me achieving one of my goals: 45-minutes a day, 5 days a week, I’m building muscle strength in my lower body by lifting weights, combined with yoga.

I believe the effectiveness of my autosuggestion is depends on my consistent repetition; belief in my statements I repeat; and combining those statements with my actions.

I’m seeing results! How about you?

Build autosuggestion into your “daily do,” and see the manifestation of your dreams turn into reality.
