Just Do It
By Dee Taylor-Jolley
Nike is not just a brand–it’s a global icon of determination and innovation as well as athleticism since 1964.
At the heart of the Nike name is the legendary ‘Swoosh’, which came to life in a 1971 sketch by a Portland State University graphic design student, Carolyn Davidson.
Accounting instructor Phil Knight (Nike’s co-founder), asked her to design a logo for his new shoe company, originally called Blue Ribbon Sports. It took Davidson about 17.5 hours to design, and she was paid just $35 for her work!
Over the years, the Nike logo has undergone several changes which reflect company’s growth and its important role in sports culture.
The evolution of the Nike logo is a testament to the brand’s ability to adapt and evolve with the times while remaining true to its values.
From its humble beginnings as Blue Ribbon Sports, to one of the most recognizable logos ever created, Nike reminds us to “Just Do It!”
What should we “just do?”
We should stop second suggesting ourselves! Just get started! Do it afraid. Do it imperfect.
Yes, we’ll suck at our passion at first. We’ve just started to focus and practice it.
Remember, the world owes us nothing. We must earn our spot in everything we do.
And we can’t earn our spot in everything we do if we don’t establish habits to help us achieve our goals.
According to Atomic Habits, by author James Clear, goal setting is pointless, if we don’t understand the need to implement good habits first. He estimates it takes 3 months to fully implement a daily habit. (Use “habit stacking” to get going.)
Wow! A new daily habit can help us reach our goal.
So, what are we waiting for?
Just Do It!
